Scientific Marketing & Analysis:
The SMA Concept
Scientific Marketing & Analysis was founded in early 1988 by former Maine Congressman and diplomat David F. Emery as a part-time venture through which to provide a variety of opinion-oriented consulting services. It has since grown into a full time operation that designs and conducts public opinion surveys for candidates, businesses and advocacy groups throughout the United States, and provides support services for other opinion research firms.
Dave Emery's expertise in polling and statistical analysis can be traced to his days as a State Legislator in Maine, and later as Congressman, when he and his campaign staff designed and conducted their own political surveys and tracking polls. So accurate were these in-house polls that he was able to track and project his upset victory over incumbent Democratic Congressman Peter N. Kyros in the Watergate Election of 1974, as well as the stunning election of Maine's first Independent Governor James B. Longley that same year. No other polling firm or newspaper foresaw either victory.
Throughout his career, candidates and analysts alike have sought his insight concerning candidate elections, ballot measures, demographics and political strategies. When the Maine Republicans approached him to assist with the 1993 decennial reapportionment of the State Legislature, he crafted a plan so rigorous in its application of statute and legal precedent that it withstood a review by the Maine Supreme Court, and resulted in the recapture of the Maine State Senate by the Republican Party in the very next election. Very strong Republican gains were also achieved in the House, failing a majority by only 3 seats out of 151.

At the heart of the Scientific Marketing success story is the suite of sampling algorithms and statistical analysis tools developed by Dave Emery specifically for the purpose. SMA makes extensive use of 'virtual electorate' behavior modeling which provides a means of comparing the political dynamic of one community with that of any other, as well as with known historical patterns. This particular statistical tool allows SMA to identify trends and develop strategies quickly and efficiently. Other tools developed by SMA guide the polling sample selection, ensuring a statistically valid demographic cross-section of the electorate being surveyed.
